Role Summary

Avesta Housing is seeking an experienced and mission-driven Vice President of Finance to serve as a key member of our executive leadership team, guiding the organization's financial strategy in support of stable operations, responsible growth, and meaningful community impact. In this executive role, you'll lead enterprise-wide financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and risk management while overseeing accounting, reporting, and compliance functions. You'll work closely with the CEO, Board of Directors, and senior leaders to translate complex financial information into clear, actionable guidance that supports smart decision-making and sound governance.

What You'll Do

Lead enterprise-wide financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and risk management
Oversee accounting, reporting, and compliance functions
Work closely with the CEO, Board of Directors, and senior leaders to translate complex financial information into clear, actionable guidance
Align financial resources with Avesta's mission of creating and maintaining quality, affordable homes for people in need
Serve as a strategic advisor and thought partner at the executive and Board level
Lead and develop teams while strengthening systems and processes

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, business administration, public administration, nonprofit management, or a related field
Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible leadership experience in finance, accounting, business strategy, or related executive management roles
Significant experience leading financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, cash management, and organizational financial strategy
Experience overseeing accounting operations and using financial information to guide executive and Board-level decision-making
Strong strategic thinking and executive judgment, with the ability to connect financial strategy to organizational mission and operations
Advanced financial analysis, modeling, forecasting, and scenario-planning skills
Strong knowledge of budgeting, internal controls, financial reporting, cash flow management, and reserve planning
Ability to interpret complex financial information and communicate it clearly to non-financial audiences
Excellent leadership, interpersonal, and relationship-management skills
Ability to influence decisions, build trust, and collaborate effectively across departments and with external partners
Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple high-level priorities in a fast-paced environment
Sound problem-solving, risk-assessment, and decision-making skills

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in business, finance, accounting, public administration, or a related field
Experience in nonprofit, social enterprise, public-sector, affordable housing, healthcare, or similarly mission-driven and operationally complex environments
Experience supporting strategic growth initiatives, financing strategies, business partnerships, or other enterprise-level business planning efforts
Experience presenting to Boards, Finance Committees, lenders, investors, and other external stakeholders
Certified Public Accountant (CPA)

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

While the Vice President of Finance's work may be largely performed from home, the person in this role is also expected to maintain a presence at our main office, located at 307 Cumberland Avenue, Portland, Maine.

Compensation

$175,000–$200,000
